The Marquette men's golf team ventured into the Conference USA Championships with high expectations but left the tournament with a disappointing 10th-place finish. The event took place at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla. The championship was led from start to finish by Texas Christian, which ran away from the field.
Marquette was led by sophomore Joe Weber who finished the event in a tie for 20th. Weber played extremely well in the final round and posted a 71. For the tournament Weber was 6-over par, 222 total. Weber rebounded to finish the championship with that impressive score after opening action on the first day of play with a 78. This is a testament to Weber's work ethic as he has raised his game to a higher level.
Kyle Murphy, a sophomore, finished in a tie for 33rd place with a total of 226. Murphy's consistency was once again evident on the Lake Jovita terrain. Junior Nathan Colson finished the tournament in a tie for 41st place with a 229 total, a disappointing conclusion after an opening-round 74 placed him near the top of the leaderboard.
Freshman Mike Bielawski fired two consecutive 74s to conclude the event. Bielawski ended with a total of 230. Sophomore Steve Sass posted a score of 233.
The individual medalist honors went to TCU's Adam Meyer, who also won the Conference USA Player of the Year award. Meyer was red hot as he finished 10-under-par for the event with a total score of 206. Meyer won the Freshmen of the Year award in the conference last year and has improved his game dramatically.
As a team, TCU finished five strokes under par with a three-day total of 859. The second-place finisher, Charlotte, posted a seven-over-par total of 871. The top five finishers were rounded out by Southern Miss (880), Alabama-Birmingham (882) and South Florida (885).
The team came out fairly slowly and could not recover from that sluggish start. The team did post two solid scores in the second and third round. The team finished with a total of 902. They improved drastically from the first round to the third.
The team will have one final chance to make a statement as they conclude their spring season at the First Energy Intercollegiate in Akron, Ohio, from April 24 to 25.
