This year we were going to do it early. Spring break plans were supposed to be finalized and the reservations to a warm, tropical location booked all before I had even started shopping away at my Christmas list.
My friend Scott took charge of making the plans a reality — that poor kid. It was like trying to convince first graders to stand in a single file line. Everyone kept going their own way and changing their minds. Every time I saw him he'd show me three brochures to possible destinations. He knew prices, nightly drink specials and the best days to go.
So where are my friends and I headed in 23 days? We're not sure yet. Some are thinking Florida, Las Vegas, Spain or Mexico. Some can't get time off work. And some just are flat out broke.
This is my plead to everyone at Marquette. Please, just do something fun with your entire week off. We will just be wrapping up our nearly two month stretch without a single day off. Honestly, how many more opportunities in life do you have to take off with all your friends, go some place exciting and leave the secrets of what happens during break at that location?
Now, for all those who are griping about money, your complaints are well heard and deeply understood. Personally, I'm swiping my way to spring break on the good old Visa. Yes, I know the possibility of being nailed with a 20 percent finance charge is very likely. However, I'm working hard and trying my best to save money. And there is nothing more that I would like then to spend a chunk of my money on a vacation with my friends.
If you can't do an extravagant trip, remember having an awesome Spring Break doesn't mean have to mean swimming in the ocean and laying on a beach (but come on, how amazing does that sound)? Take a road trip anywhere; visit friends at another school; sign up to lend a helping hand down in New Orleans; spend a day doing something exciting, like skydiving; plan a weekend in a close city, like Chicago; or find last minute deals on travel Web sites.
We have our whole lives to work and be responsible. So take advantage of this time! It's exactly what everyone needs to regain the strength to continue on with daily to-do lists. Mine includes, but is not limited to: work at night, write fabulous columns for your entertainment, study, keep my apartment clean and laundry pile low, fill out several job applications, and hopefully attend many interviews.
I guarantee you spring break plans will be money well spent. In 20 years I'll remember having a crazy time (at a to be determined location) over studying for some exam. Now I have to help finalize these plans. It's my last hurrah — I need a plane ticket, a beach and my friends.
P.S. — Happy early Mardi Gras week!
