The Tae Kwon Do club recently competed in the 30th annual Great Midwest Championship. The tournament was the club's last of the year, according to club president Iain McPherson. They will now prepare for belt testing May 1.
On Saturday eight team members competed in any of three categories forms, board breaking or sparring at the championship.
"It's not just the competition," McPherson said. "There's also the martial arts aspect and getting ready for testing."
Yellow Belt Daniel Widjaja competed in all three events and came in first in forms and board breaking and second in sparring. Alexander Schmid took first in sparring and second in board breaking and Fabian Guavita came in third in forms.
Brown Belts Kelly Kamiya and Hiep Phung took second and third in board breaking, respectively. Phung also grabbed second in sparring while Kamiya took fourth in forms. Ivan Ambriz, another Brown Belt, came in third in both forms and sparring.
High Green Belt Alexander De Leon earned a second-place finish in forms and third-place finishes in both board breaking and sparring and High Purple Belt John Dralle took second in forms and sparring and third place in board breaking.
