The Marquette club tennis team played well in its first ever trip to the National College Championships in Austin, Texas, according to club president Doug McCollum. The team had a strong showing in pool play and finished with a 1-4 overall record at the tournament.
After taking second place in its pool by a tiebreaker, Marquette faced Penn State and was defeated 30-8. In its last match the team lost a hard fought match to Georgia Tech.
"We all felt like we should have beaten them," said McCollum. "But every match was close and everyone played hard."
The team lost 24-20 to North Carolina-Wilmington in its first match of the tournament, but came back strong in against Sam Houston State, winning 30-20. In its final match of pool play, Marquette fell 28-22 to Cornell, the eventual champions of the pool.
