If you read and believe those ridiculous, malicious, absolutely wonderful and accurate tabloid magazines, Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson may be beginning to play house with a budding new romance of their own. But at the start of "You, Me and Dupree" Hudson wants nothing more than for Wilson to get out of her life and out of her home.
For newlyweds Carl and Molly Peterson (Matt Dillon and Hudson) life cannot get any better. With a nice house and successful careers they seem to be ready to begin their happy life together. Everything is smooth sailing until Carl's best man and best friend Randy Dupree (Wilson) shows up jobless and homeless. Carl has no other choice but to let his friend invade his and Molly's privacy, since Dupree was fired for attending Carl's wedding.
What a friend. At least Dupree's got his priorities straight.
Dupree promises the stay will only be a few days, as he searches for a new job. But days turn into weeks and the houseguest soon begins to overstay his welcome.
Molly begins to tire of Dupree but Carl is too busy dealing with his father-in-law (Michael Douglas), who has hinted to Carl that he wants him to take his daughter's last name and implies he's not too keen on grandchildren when he gives Carl brochures about vasectomies.
Problems escalate even more when Molly's opinion changes about the lovable Dupree and he falls under the good graces of Molly's father. It seems the charismatic Dupree is starting to take Carl's place in the household.
"You, Me and Dupree" plays at the Varsity Theatre Friday at 8 p.m.
