NASCAR stock car racing sensation Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) is a national hero because of his "win no matter what" approach. He and his loyal friend and racing partner Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), are a fearless pair – admiringly nicknamed "Shake" and "Bake" by their fans for their ability to finish so many races in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
After a frightening, and a tad embarrassing, crash sends Ricky Bobby to the hospital, he loses his courage and crashes head-first on hard times. He turns his back on racing and takes his sons back to his small hometown to do what any grown man would do in a situation like this – live with his mother.
It becomes apparent that Ricky Bobby is meant for life in the fast lane, so to help him get his two feet back in the car, Ricky Bobby's mother reluctantly turns to the only person she thinks can help her son – his estranged father Reese Bobby (Gary Cole). Reese still has a few old racing tricks up his sleeve to help Ricky conquer his fear of driving.
When flamboyant French Formula One driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen) challenges Ricky Bobby, he must face his demons and find his nerve to fight Girard for the right of NASCAR's top driver. Cohen whose movie "Borat" made a killing at the box office, hilariously plays Girard.
Even though Ricky Bobby is a ballad of a man who can only count to No. 1, that's all he really ever needs.
