During his four years in office, Gov. Jim Doyle has been working tirelessly to improve the state of Wisconsin and the lives of its citizens. Doyle has increased financial aid for students, added new jobs to the state and is helping make Wisconsin a high-tech leader in the nation.
As college students, we are interested in education. Since coming into office, Doyle has fought to double financial aid for college students, which allows for many of us to be here at Marquette. Doyle has also proposed the Wisconsin Covenant, an innovative new plan that would guarantee a college education to high school students who maintain a B-average and stay out of trouble. Meanwhile, out in Washington, Rep. Mark Green has voted to cut federal student aid by more than $12 billion. Do we really want someone in the governor's office who is going to cut our financial aid?
When we graduate, will you be able to find a job with fair pay in Wisconsin? You will be able to if Doyle is re-elected. Under his leadership, 170,000 new jobs were created in Wisconsin. Doyle twice implemented a minimum wage increase, which has raised the state minimum wage to $6.50 an hour – $1.35 more than the federal minimum wage. It's that type of leadership we need in Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Green has voted to provide tax breaks to companies that send our jobs overseas and has voted against raising the federal minimum wage eight times while in Congress. With him as our governor, we won't have jobs in this state when we graduate.
We need a governor who will move Wisconsin forward, and there is no better candidate than Doyle. Embryonic stem cell research holds the vast potential to not only cure diseases and save lives, but also create new high-tech jobs in Wisconsin. And no one is doing more to help bring the benefits of this research to Wisconsin than Doyle. Meanwhile, Green is in Washington voting to ban and even criminalize embryonic stem cell research. Is that who you want leading Wisconsin?
The choice for governor is simple. You can choose between an extreme candidate who votes to cut financial aid, refuses to raise the minimum wage and doesn't care to see life-threatening diseases cured. Or you can vote for Doyle, a man who is leading this state with integrity and moving us forward in a positive direction. The choice is simple: We need Doyle representing us!
