It's that special time of year again.
You know what time. When the "slut rule" comes back full force.
Come on, haven't you seen "Mean Girls"? (Go rent it.)
During Halloween, girls are supposed to dress like sluts (hey, their words, not mine). In fact, if they don't dress like a slut, they're just not cool.
As Lindsay Lohan said, "In girl world, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it."
I'm serious! Go watch the movie!
Or don't. Just look outside this weekend.
Even though it's cold enough to be considered winter weather, girls of all types will be wearing lingerie … and little else.
And it's okay, because it's Halloween weekend!
Okay, there will be the select few in full out costumes, but if you've seen the movie, you know those girls grew up in Africa, where it's hot. So, any autumn chill is freaking cold as ice to them and therefore they must cover up in order not to freeze to death instantly.
But they aren't the norm.
What's worse than the lack of clothing is the lack of creativity. No longer does slutty only apply to schoolgirls, cops, and secretaries, but now almost anything can take the slut route. Little Red Riding Ho? Captain Hook-er?
"So, what are you going to be for Halloween?"
"A slutty (insert noun here)."
I'm sorry, but I'm still shocked every time I see a slutty nun. There's just something wrong with that.
And then there are the girls who have lost all imagination and simply succumb to the tail or ears costume. If you're going to be a cat, please at least spring for the tail AND ears. Maybe draw on a whisker or two.
Now on any normal day, such attire would be the cause of astonished glares and disapproving glances. But on Halloween weekend, it's the norm.
I wanted to do a little research into why slutty costumes are "in." But I couldn't find any girl who would let me use her name.
"If I wore this on any normal Saturday, people would say I was leading guys on," said a senior College of Communication student, showing me her barely there vampire costume. "But on Halloween, the girls and the guys know the rules. We're just doing it to have fun and not be judged."
I'm judging. Well, I would be, but I didn't grow up in Africa. So, if you'll excuse me, I have to go shorten my costume.
