Both the club baseball team and the men's and women's club rowing teams were in action this past weekend. The baseball team traveled to Schaumberg, Ill. to take on Roosevelt University at Alexian Field on Thursday. The game ended in a 28-0 victory thanks to timely hitting and good fielding.
"Despite the lack of competition, we looked very good all game and did not make many errors. Also, we did a good job of hitting with runners in scoring position," said senior pitcher/outfielder Mike Sherwood.
The victory over Roosevelt puts the team's record at 6-6, but Sherwood still looked at the fall season as a success.
"We used the fall season as a means of feeling out the type of talent we will have for the spring season," Sherwood said. "With the addition of these new guys and the returning players, the team looks the best it has in my four years."
The spring season is set to start March 26, 2007 when the team travels to play the University of Wisconsin.
The rowing teams also were in action this weekend at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The men's team finished 5th out of 28 teams. Its time for the event was 18:46, 34 seconds behind the first place team from Colgate University. As a result of its finish, the crew squad will be asked back to the event next year.
The second boat the crew team raced on Saturday was in the lightweight division, where the average weight of each member must be less than 160 lbs.
"A very competitive field awaited the guys in this event, and we knew it would be a tough race," said head coach Jim Peters.
The team finished 13th out of 14 boats, but Peters was encouraged by its performance.
"The guys received the experience of racing in a tight field on one of the most prestigious race courses in the world," Peters said.
The women's team finished 7th out of 29 teams. The final time for the women was 21:16, 49 seconds behind the winning boat from Bucknell University.
"This is a tremendous achievement," Peters said. "The Head of the Charles is the biggest rowing regatta in the world, attracting teams from the U.S., Canada, and Europe."
The women also earned an invitation back to the event next year.
Football and Rugby
It has been a disappointing season for the club football team, but things got a little brighter this weekend in Cincinnati where the team took on Xavier University. The Golden Eagles recorded their first victory of the season, defeating Xavier 16-6 to put their record at 1-5 with one game remaining.
It was a solid all-around performance for Marquette according to senior captain Joe Ribbich.
"The defense played an outstanding game, holding back Xavier's offense numerous times and forcing turnovers," Ribbich said. "Offensive players put on a solid display of both the passing and running game.
"Although only 21 out of the team's 31 members were able to make the trip, every player arrived on the field with the mentality that we were going to win," said Ribbich.
Ribbich also spoke about the importance of the victory for the team saying, "it improved team morale as well as signified our potential to achieve further wins."
The team hopes to continue its success in other aspects as well, mainly with a heightened recruiting effort, as well as spring practices to strengthen fundamentals.
Marquette will play its final game of the season October 30th when it visits Carthage College.
While the football team just got their first victory, the women's rugby team has been racking them up all year. Its record sits at 4-2 after a 48-5 rout of UW-Madison on October 14th.
Senior Theresa Carroll credited the team's success to the heightened work ethic this year.
"We have worked incredibly hard this year, adding extra practice time for fitness and conditioning alone," Carroll said. "We are a small team, but we are very fit."
Another key to the team's success has been the play of scrum captain Jessica "Juice" Mueller.
"She plays with a lot of intensity and heart, and she has a great field presence," said Carroll.
The team's next event is scheduled to be the alumni scrimmage on October 28th. This is an event for the players to try to outshine the former members of the club.
"The alumni scrimmage should be a great time," Carroll said. "We have a great relationship with our alumni. They are very supportive of us. Sadly, we will have to beat them on Saturday!"
