Since the beginning of the semester, there have been numerous articles about the struggling men's soccer team. Frankly, I am about to sum it up. Louis Bennett does not know how to lead a team, and he will never be able to get the players to follow his lead when he continues to act as he has been.
If you read the article published two weeks ago, "A team in crisis," you can easily piece together Bennett's quotes to basically say something along the lines of, "All those who were not recruited by me aren't good enough to be on my team or to play in my 'system.' " How is a team expected to compete in one of the toughest conferences in the nation when the coach shows no discipline, integrity or leadership? He publicly humiliated his players. Not to mention, Bennett has actually told the returning players something along the lines of "you're not my boys/players, I didn't recruit you." Bennett has also said how the players can only play "Adlard-style" soccer and are incapable of playing "Bennett-style" soccer.
If you ask him the reasons why the team is losing he'll speak of this "system" that he's implementing, a "system" that will work. Look, soccer is not that complicated a game, and I'd have to ask him why he can't implement this "system." He's been training the team for more than 10 months. Either Louis Bennett is incompetent and can't implement his own system, or the system won't work in the Big East. Maybe it worked in the Horizon League, but this is the big leagues now. These players have given up their lives, and trust me, playing any sport for Marquette is a full-time job. These boys have given hundreds of hours of time. These players sacrifice so much just so their coach, and leader, can publicly humiliate them on numerous occasions by disgracing their ability to play a sport that most have been playing for pretty much their whole lives.
Basically, Louis Bennett has taken no responsibility for the struggling season, and he's blaming the reason for his 1-11-1 record on the players returning from last year's team. He shows no integrity, he's selfish, and he clearly shows that he does not know even the basic principles of leading a team. And I'm pretty sure that Marquette was founded on the values of integrity, selflessness and leadership. I think the situation should be reevaluated, because he's getting paid more than $80,000 a year to be unsuccessful, to place himself and his reputation before the team and our school, to mock the fundamental values our school was founded on, and to belittle student athletes.
I feel the administration needs to intervene because Louis Bennett clearly does not share the same values that we, the Marquette community, lead our lives by.
