He pleaded no contest to the charge on July 28 and was sentenced to one year in jail, 12 years probation and 100 hours of community service, according to court records.
He will also have to register as a sex offender and submit a DNA sample. In addition, he is not allowed to access any Internet chat rooms or have any unsupervised contact with children under the age of 18.
Periathamby was charged with using a computer to facilitate a child sex crime in March 2005 after being arrested by Brookfield police on Feb. 27, 2005.
Deanna Heath, a citizen witness from Michigan who worked with U.S. Cyberwatch posing as 13-year-old "Christie Balsa," alerted the Brookfield Police Department that Periathamby would be waiting in a Pick 'n Save parking lot to have sex.
The Tribune reported Periathamby used the screen name "TOGERKING" to correspond with Heath, and wanted to meet the fictitious Balsa to let her "experience sex."
According to Brigid O'Brien Miller, director of university communication, Periathamby's resignation from Marquette was effective May 31, 2006. Following his charges in March 2005 up until May 31 of this year, he was still employed by the university but was not working on campus.
