Summer’s hottest look? The high-waisted, shortest of the short, washed out to the max, ripped to shreds jean cutoff shorts, of course! Perfect for summer music festivals, cutoffs push any outfit from cute to rock n’ roll in seconds! But with the 4th of July upon us, why not spruce up an old pair with a bit o’ good old-fashioned patriotism? With a little bit of creativity and plenty of paint, everyone will be screaming “God bless America!” when they see your getup (and you’ll be grinning because of how inexpensive it was)!
I basically live in cutoffs, and one thing I’ve realized through this obsession is how expensive they can be! While Urban Outfitters and Topshop can have great fits, its always worth it to take a look at cheaper online stores like NastyGal and Tobi, or my personal favorite: Goodwill! In a matter of seconds, an old pair of 90’s mom jeans can be reincarnated into vintage heaven!
So, after rampaging your nearest thrift store or tearing apart your closet, grab your cutoffs, some blue and red fabric markers or paint, masking tape, duct tape, and scissors.

For the “stripes” side of the shorts, tape strips of masking tape parallel to each other on the right front side. In between the strips, use the red fabric paint to create the “stripes”.
For the “stars” side, cut star-shaped pieces out of the duct tape (or you can even use star-shaped stickers for smaller stars) and stick them onto the shorts, about two inches apart. Using blue spray paint or a blue fabric marker, color over the stars. After the paint dries, peel the tape off both sides and Voila! Trendy, all-American bottoms! (You can fill in the stars with white or just leave the denim for a unique, rustic flair)

So how do you wear it? I personally love Kylie Jenner’s look, paired with a simple white tank, combat boots, and heart-shaped sunnies for a cool, relaxed vibe!
Also, throwing on a rocker tee always gives a punk edge to an ensemble. Pair with some Chuck Taylors or combat boots and John Lennon-esque sunglasses!

Being the hopeless vintage addict that I am, though, I would have to go with a classic sleeveless button down, a cute cheetah-print belt, and red Converse. Tie up the button-down for a summery vibe and make sure to add plenty of spiky bangles, a pop of red lipstick, and a bottle of Coca-Cola! Muah, perfection!

Alright girls, whatever your take for this 4th may be, just remember to wear your colors with honor, drink plenty of lemonade, and make sure your hair stays away from those fireworks! “Be young, be dope, be proud. Like an American.”
