Sources are telling ESPN that Marquette is targeting Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin in the search for Buzz Williams’ replacement.
Former UCLA coach Ben Howland remains in the mix and is reportedly still very interested in the position, while it is not known if Martin has engaged in any conversations with Marquette.
Beginning his coaching career as an assistant for Purdue, his alma mater, Martin has compiled a 124-82 record as the head coach of Missouri State (2008-11) and Tennessee (2011-present).
During his first two seasons at Tennessee, Martin coached the Vols to second and fifth-place finishes in the SEC appearing in the NIT both seasons.
He made his first NCAA tournament appearance this season as his team went from the First Four to the Sweet Sixteen with wins over Iowa, Massachussetts and Mercer. The Volunteers were eliminated Friday after a nail-biting 73-71 loss to the Michigan Wolverines.
The Illinois native played college basketball at Purdue primarily as a small forward, helping the Boilermakers to back-to-back Big 10 Championships in 1994 and 1995.
Martin spent some time in Milwaukee as a member of the Bucks from 1996-1997. He played in just seven games combined for Vancouver and Milwaukee in his short-lived NBA career.
