While reading the Sept. 14 article in the Tribune, “Walker stumpers spur students,” I couldn’t help but take issue with Students for Walker’s claim that they are the only students backing candidates in the 2010 election.
College Democrats is actively working on campus on behalf of gubernatorial candidate Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett (D), senatorial re-election candidate U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D) and others to get out the student vote and to get these leaders elected to office. If you asked these candidates if they have a student group pulling for them on Marquette’s campus, I’m confident they would emphatically say, “College Democrats.”
Between now and Nov. 4, we hope to help show how Democrats like Barrett and Feingold will help move Wisconsin forward. Our candidates are the ones who are going to lead job creation, promote fiscal responsibility and turn around Wisconsin’s failing schools.
I urge all students, regardless of political persuasion, to inform themselves on these issues and get involved. There is too much at stake this election season to sit idly by and let increasingly radical sectors — such as the Tea Party movement — determine the direction this state and this country will take.
If you are interested in joining or supporting College Democrats, please e-mail me or come to our meetings every Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Cudahy Hall 120.
