Milwaukee is calling you, Marquette student. More than 100 local agencies are in need of YOUR help; they are depending on Marquette's largest service project, Hunger Clean-Up, to provide them with the tools and manpower to effect change in our community.
Hunger Clean-Up, a one-day event that serves as the university's premier example of service to others, will be held on April 21.
This annual project acts as a springboard for students who wish to become more involved on campus and serve both the Milwaukee and Marquette communities.
Over the past 18 years, Hunger Clean-Up has raised more than $280,000 for 80 agencies in the area.
These local agencies apply for grants designed to help them start new initiatives or compensate for the all too common losses in funding.
This year, four agencies were chosen as the grant recipients:
St. Catherine's Residence is an organization that helps single, low-income mothers find and maintain safe, affordable housing.
St. Benedict's Community Meal serves an evening meal that feeds 300 to 500 people per night. The money donated will go toward a program to help St. Ben's guests obtain identification cards and/or GEDs.
The third organization, Walker's Point Center for the Arts, will use the money for an after-school program, SOHO, that brings artists and performers to schools to educate and introduce children to different methods of expression.
Finally, the Grand Avenue Club will use the donation to obtain magnification and voice software to help the visually impaired and the blind.
In addition to fundraising, this one-day event acts as one of the nation's largest community service projects.
Over the years, 21,000 volunteers have helped more than 700 agencies in need.
These agencies in the greater Milwaukee area desperately need the help of Marquette students and the services they provide.
The work done on Hunger Clean-Up often helps start or finish important and meaningful projects.
This April, approximately 1,500 students are expected to participate in more than 100 sites.
Volunteers return to campus with fond memories of the people they met, new bonds among their team members and a fresh perspective on their own community.
Whether you sign up as part of a team or as an individual, joining Hunger Clean-Up this year could be your first opportunity to make a significant impact within the Milwaukee community.
