The indictment returned Tuesday by a federal grand jury charged Dr. Mark Lubinsky, 56, with one count of receiving child pornography. The charge carries a prison term of five to 20 years and a fine of $250,000.
He said computer technicians were doing a software inventory, preparing to upgrade the computer system, and Lubinsky asked that they run a virus check on his machine. Technicians discovered the pornographic material during the scan, Katschke said.
He said college officials seized the computer, confronted the doctor and notified the FBI.
Lubinsky resigned after the investigation started, he said. He had worked at the college since 1990 and taught bioethics courses.
Katschke said that as a pediatric geneticist, Lubinsky saw patients of all ages, and in addition to diagnosing and treating genetic disorders, he would consult with couples who were concerned about passing on conditions to children.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Haanstad emphasized Lubinsky is not accused of molesting or photographing any patients.
He said Lubinsky's first court appearance had not yet been scheduled.
