Another Marquette record was broken this week as junior Jenny Pribyl broke the pole vault record at the Panther Classic at Northern Iowa University in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Saturday.
Pribyl's height of 10-11 3/4 made her the fourth collegiate finisher in her event and gave her a new personal best.
"It feels good, but in order to compete in conference I need to go higher," Pribyl said of breaking the record.
"The box in the gym has been a big help," she said, referring to the new pole-vaulting pit in the Marquette Gym. She also credited assistant coach Jason Stuke "with making an effort to improve the pole vaulting."
Junior Emily Leklem finished first in the shot put with a toss of 45-5 3/4. This was her first meet back after redshirting all of last year due to a shoulder injury.
"It felt pretty amazing," Leklem said on her first place finish. "It felt like it was a blessing from God and a good place to build on for the rest of the season."
Leklem didn't know how she was going to perform after being out for so long, but once the competition started she was aiming to win.
"My first throw was 44 feet, and the leader threw 45 feet," Leklem said. "After that, the whole idea of it being my first meet back went out the window. I wasn't going to let her win."
Sophomore Michaela Courtney continued her great start to the season by winning the women's 3000-meter run by nearly 40 seconds with the time of 9:42.57.
Freshman Heidi Lindeman and sophomore Nicole Johnson finished second and third in the women's 1000-meter run. Their times were 2:56.49 and 2:58.84, respectively.
Sophomore Allison Sauer came away with first place in the mile and her time of 5:11.58 is her season best. Senior Audrey Schiltz (5:12.39) and sophomore Susanna Emond (5:14.12) were close behind finishing in second and fourth place in the mile.
On the men's side, sophomore David Henderson finished third in the men's 1000-meter run with a time of 2:31.04 and junior Jonathon Rosploch placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 50-3 1/2.
In the men's triple jump junior Charles Mashozhera was the second colligate finisher. His jump of 48-11 3/4 is the best jump so far in Conference USA this season.
Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cloud County Community College, Augustana, Bradley's women and Wisconsin's men attended the Panther Classic. There was no team scoring for this meet.
Up next for Marquette is the Iowa State Cyclone Classic Feb. 13-14 in Ames, Iowa.
