There is a new set of eyes on men's soccer players this season, and it is not just coaches, scouts or supporters – it's satellites. Data analysis has been one of Marquette's cornerstone pieces this season. College soccer is going through a data revolution, and it's helping teams change the way they train one download at a time. Marquette is using Catapult, a global positioning system monitoring device that measures various internal and external statistics, helping coaches understand how hard a player is working and how well they are standing up to the pace of a given practice or game.
The BIG EAST conference suggested going to college for two-years before entering the NBA Draft.

JOURNAL: Tools from past help BIG EAST reclaim identity, remain relevant

John Steppe, Assistant Sports Editor November 30, 2017
Five years ago, tensions were boiling between football and non-football members in a once-proud basketball conference. “The last several years prior to the basketball schools breaking away, we had a lot of tension in our conference meetings,” BIG EAST associate commissioner John Paquette said. “And the tension was clear.” Fed up with football-centric decisions tarnishing the conference’s superb basketball reputation, the seven Catholic non-football members, dubbed the “Catholic Seven,” split with the rest of their former conference and formed the new BIG EAST. As the conference enters its fifth season of play in 2017-’18, similar tactics to what put the BIG EAST on the map originally are leading its resurgence into the college basketball landscape.

Andrew Goldstein, Sports Content Executive November 28, 2017
Spikeball, also known as “roundnet,” is typically played by four people on two-person teams. The server stands six feet back from a net and spikes it. The goal is to hit it so the other team cannot return it. Each team has three hits to get the ball back onto the net. Whichever team hits 21 points first wins.

Van Kleunen’s length could solve women’s basketball defensive woes

Brian Boyle, Sports Staff Writer November 28, 2017
With three minutes to go in Marquette’s home opener last Sunday, redshirt freshman Lauren Van Kleunen picked up Loyola-Maryland guard Alexis Gray at half court, swiped the ball from her hand at the top of the key and dribbled the length of the court for an emphatic breakaway layup. The layup helped the Golden Eagles to an early 18-9 lead and brought the entire Marquette bench to its feet and on the court to celebrate the freshman phenom’s feat. Van Kleunen finished the game with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting, seven rebounds, one assist, one steal and a block in just 26 minutes. More importantly, after a 23-point NCAA debut at the University of New Mexico, the sweet-shooting, long-limbed forward announced herself to the Al McGuire Center as perhaps the most exciting player of the new season.
