KORENICH: Cell phones inhibit communication

Maya Korenich, Opinions Columnist October 24, 2017

While standing in line at Erbert’s and Gerbert’s last week, I looked up from my phone only to realize that everyone around me was on their phone too. We’ve all been guilty of that. It seems that...

Bernie Sanders Medicare for All bill supported by many Democrats

HARRINGTON: Medicare-For-All support huge step forward for Democrats

Reilly Harrington, Opinions Columnist October 24, 2017
There is no question that the political left in this country is divided. The populist campaign of Bernie Sanders gave rise to a more vocal and active progressive movement, especially among youth voters. However, more traditional Democrats like Hilary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama have been hit with some justified waves of scrutiny from this new progressive movement.
In fall of last year, MUPD was in the process of hiring a mental health professional.

Editorial: Annual Fire and Safety Report under represents off-campus crime

Caroline Kaufman October 10, 2017
MUPD must take initiative to provide readily accessible, comprehensive crime statistics to the Marquette community. There is a difference between meeting a requirement and meeting an obligation, and in this instance, MUPD has a moral obligation to provide safety awareness to the area where many of Marquette's upperclassmen students live.

KORENICH: Milwaukee is confused about the weather, so am I

Maya Korenich, Columnist October 10, 2017
Every morning before I leave for class I wake up, check the weather on my phone and stand by the window to get a feeling of what it’s like outside so I can decide what to wear. But almost every day I seem to put on an outfit that either has me sweating buckets or spending the day shivering. Milwaukee is confused about its weather, and so am I.

HARRINGTON: Gun lobbies are killing the nation

Reilly Harrington, Columnist October 10, 2017
This is the ugly truth of American life: The right to bear arms matters more than basic human rights, and the government stopped caring a long time ago.

DUFAULT: 45’s war of words with Steph Curry reflect impulsivity, lack of empathy

Jackson Dufault, Columnist October 10, 2017
Never in my life would I have said that the President of the United States is getting into a war of words with a basketball player. It’s a prime example of Trump’s serious impulsivity and his own insecurities.
Esther Aviles and other Empowerment members sit-in on the fourth floor of the AMU in protest of Marquettes response to the Jane Doe case.

Editorial: University Title IX response self-congratulatory, evasive

October 3, 2017
Based on the two aforementioned incidents alone, there seems to be some discrepancies between Marquette's actions and its words regarding campus sexual assault.

KORENICH: Counseling center a valuable resource for students

Maya Korenich October 3, 2017
Marquette has been taking great strides to address mental health more with things like student media’s “Breaking the Silence” campaign. This week, I visited the Counseling Center to get some more information on what they offered.

DUFAULT: Tight sanctions on Greek Life necessary

Jackson Dufault, Columnist October 3, 2017
Marquette Greek life has received a notorious reputation. Multiple suspensions have resulted in tight sanctions from the university. As a result, Greek life has changed substantially. These new tight sanctions have not gone unnoticed by Marquette Greek life, as chapters have tightened their bylaws and increased their emphasis on member involvement.
HARRINGTON: Taking a knee is bigger than Trump

HARRINGTON: ‘Taking a knee’ is bigger than Trump

Reilly Harrington, Opinions Columnist October 3, 2017
Kneeling during the national anthem is not about protesting Trump. It is not a statement about free speech or about professional football players being “ungrateful." It is about police brutality, and if we as a society refuse to acknowledge that, then the protests will be in vain and nothing will change.
The Axon body camera fits on an officers front pocket.

Editorial: MUPD must deliver on body camera promise

September 26, 2017
police departments need to be able to tell their side of a situation with their own video. The implementation of body cameras is for MUPD's own good as much as it is for the community's. Imagine if an officer needed to use their firearm, and that situation wasn't caught on a third-party objective monitoring system. There would be no proper checks in place, and public opinion and speculation would not be on the side of the officer.
