KORENICH: Too many trophies makes children less resilient

KORENICH: Too many trophies makes children less resilient

Maya Korenich, Opinions Columnist April 10, 2018
I’m not saying that children shouldn’t be awarded at all, I think we as a society should just have higher standards for what deserves an award. Children don’t need participation awards. The award should be the opportunity they received to learn a new skill, spend time with peers and improve as a person. It should be more special and out of the ordinary things that are rewarded.

KORENICH: Walmart #MeToo effort misguided

KORENICH: Walmart #MeToo effort misguided

Maya Korenich April 4, 2018
When companies or individuals decide to make information regarding women’s sexuality, sexual health, or just plain information about sex hard to find and access, they are feeding into rape culture. It should be normal for women to talk about sex. It should be easy for women to read about their bodies and sexuality.
BEG: Support for Palestine unfairly taboo

BEG: Support for Palestine unfairly taboo

Aminah Beg April 4, 2018
The tip-toeing around support for Palestine is what perpetuates the Islamophobia movement. The difficulty of criticizing the bombings of the Gaza strip permits the neglect for Muslims worldwide and the lack of concern for their safety. Right-wing conservatives will continue to attack Muslims and pose them as a threat to other countries because they ignore the truth of the Palestinian situation, and the Muslim religion as a whole.
HARRINGTON: Bolton as national security adviser signals impending conflict

HARRINGTON: Bolton as national security adviser signals impending conflict

Reilly Harrington, Opinions Columnist April 4, 2018
Our involvement in another pointless and destructive war seems all but guaranteed with John Bolton taking on the role of national security adviser. The last thing that Donald Trump, who has established a reputation for egging on unstable foreign agents such as North Korea, needs is a war hawk whispering in his ear about the United States' role in foreign politics. Any person who opposes the innocent loss of life in needless conflict should be horrified by the prospect of Bolton’s new position.

Editorial: Competing values underscore lack of total acceptance for LGBTQ community

April 4, 2018
Our histories are blighted with discrimination, and it does not only or always come from traditional Catholic values  — faith-based organizations are often among the strongest community advocates — but the competing value systems on campus are apparent.

KORENICH: Spring break has negative effect on environment

Maya Korenich, Opinions Columnist March 20, 2018
Spring break is the perfect time for college students, parents or even high schoolers to take a break and get some much-needed relaxation. Exotic and warm locations are usually the ideal spot, especially for those who live in cold-weather climates and have just experienced a brutal winter. Unfortunately, spring break can have some negative consequences on the environment, and for those who live full-time in popular spring break destinations.
