HARRINGTON: Public officials not immune to shaming

HARRINGTON: Public officials not immune to shaming

Reilly Harrington, Opinions Columnist October 2, 2018
As citizens of a democracy, the general public has a right to answers and a right to voice opinions to elected officials. This trend of outrage after a politician is publicly shamed for complicity in purely immoral policy is ludicrous.
BEG: Womens stories need attention

BEG: Women’s stories need attention

Aminah Beg October 2, 2018
The consistent stories of men attacking, raping and harassing women in this country are too clear and present to overlook. By ignoring this ongoing issue, men are free to subjugate their power over women.
EDITORIAL: University absence policy deserves second look

EDITORIAL: University absence policy deserves second look

October 2, 2018
Because of the absence policy, students may decide to go to class even if they are sick to avoid being withdrawn from their courses. Not only can that lead to that individual becoming more sick, but they can infect other students in the process.
Conservative leaders embrace of SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh highlights partisanship in America.

HARRINGTON: Apolitical America not possible

Reilly Harrington, Opinions Columnist September 25, 2018
A person describing themselves as being “not into politics” is speaking from an explicit, if unspoken, position of privilege, particularly in this political climate. As families are detained in inhumane prisons and women’s rights are in jeopardy, considering oneself to be “apolitical” feels reminiscent of an ostrich burying its head in the sand to avoid danger.
BEG: Lack of socially conscious companies poses problems

BEG: Lack of socially conscious companies poses problems

Aminah Beg September 25, 2018
The actions that some companies take violate labor laws and people’s basic human rights, and as a consumer it is difficult to put my full-fledged support behind one of them.
William Welburn (above) chaired the search committee that selected Kristen Leigh Kreple to serve as Marquettes next Title IX coordinator.

EDITORIAL: University must prioritize search for Title IX coordinator

September 25, 2018
The issues brought to the Title IX coordinators are, no doubt, very personal and often times leave lasting effects on students. Students deserve a coordinator that remains on campus on a permanent basis. Lack of coordinator availability may discourage students from divulging important and sensitive personal information and can create an unsafe campus environment.

HARTE: Standardized tests highlight inherent bias

Matthew Harte, Opinions Stringer September 25, 2018

The University of Chicago recently became the most selective university in the nation to remove the requirement to submit an ACT or SAT score during the undergraduate application process. Marquette should...

The Commons, the new residence hall which opened in August, is showing signs of rushed construction.

EDITORIAL: University rushed in construction of The Commons

September 18, 2018
The Commons should serve as an example for Marquette, demonstrating the university must be more realistic with deadlines for campus construction projects in the future.

HARTE: Juuling not worth the health risks, high cost

Matthew Harte, Opinions Stringer September 18, 2018
A classmate said that they smoke about one pack of JuulPods every two weeks and have been Juuling for the past six months. This means they’ve likely spent around $250 on Juuling, based on the current price of the starter kit and pods.

ATTEY: Mac Miller transforming before our very eyes

Brendan Attey, Opinions Columnist September 18, 2018
He was hip-hop’s most likable background figure, a self-aware kid with a kind sense of humor. It’s why not a single person yet has had a bad thing to say about him, and why his death seems to have taken an even larger-than-usual toll on his peers within the industry.
Natural disasters highlight the disparity of death tolls and storm damage.

HARRINGTON: Hurricane season reminder of racial bias in relief efforts

Reilly Harrington, Opinions Columnist September 18, 2018
One of the greatest tragedies of Hurricane Maria is its almost impermanence in the public discourse. With scandal after scandal dominating the headlines, the thousands of lives lost in during Hurricane Maria are lost to the 24-hour news cycle.
BEG: Non-Western news deserves more mainstream coverage

BEG: Non-Western news deserves more mainstream coverage

Aminah Beg September 18, 2018
There is the argument that news is only newsworthy if the events occur close to the audience members and in some way affect their lives. The “proximity” and “effect” rule would apply if reporters solely focused their content on that, but this is not the case.
