As the end of the semester draws near, Milwaukee is lighting up with holiday festivities to help release that finals week look of panic and ease you into a month-long break full of seasonal cookies, lights and no exams. We've picked some of the city's most promising events to usher you into the spirit of the holidays.

The life and times of the Marquette Turkey

Brian Keogh November 26, 2013
I’ve only seen the Marquette Turkey once. It was outside Cudahy Hall with a semicircle of people clustered around it with phones at the ready, snapping away to tweet, Instagram or Snapchat this oddly majestic creature that has taken up residence on campus.

Capital Cities, Fitz & The Tantrums dance party rolls through the Rave

Maddy Kennedy November 26, 2013
Fitz & The Tantrums and Capital Cities brought their contagiously danceable indie-pop to the Rave on Saturday night for the last stop of the “Bright Futures” tour. Both bands showcased their soulful, disco-infused style and the result was three hours of pure, unadulterated dance-party action.
Velvet Touch

Velvet Touch

Ellen Waugh November 21, 2013
With fall slowly coming to an end it’s time to start bundling on the layers. With Marquette University being so close to the lake, we MU students have a hard time trying to look fashionable while going outside in the winter. Most of our clothing consists of puffy jackets, boots and scarfs. It gets annoying having to bundle up every weekend when going out and then having to hold our coats around at events throughout the night. To make life a bit easier velvet clothing is a great option to wear on a night out with friends.

20 Blocks Away Milwaukee: Pabst Mansion

Sterling Silver November 21, 2013

The building that quietly exists, visible when walking toward the 2040s or looking out the western windows of Mashuda Hall, is the Pabst Mansion. I got sick of walking past a Wisconsin State landmark,...

‘Six Foot Something’ takes campus improv to new lengths

Erin Heffernan November 21, 2013
It seems like Marquette comedians are best in duos. Danny Pudi and Donald Glover, Chris Farley and David Spade, Rondell Sheridan and That’s So Raven (OK, the last one’s a stretch). But now, Marquette is getting one more pair bringing a new style of comedy to campus.
HEFFERNAN: What we forget about the Beat generation

HEFFERNAN: What we forget about the Beat generation

Erin Heffernan November 19, 2013
The newest movie about the Beat generation takes its name from a famous quote often attributed to William Faulkner: "Kill your darlings" the writer said advising writers to cut out (or down) the language, subjects and literary tricks they love so that to become better, more truthful writers. The movie uses the phrase to clever effect, both recalling the famous advice and hinting at the story of a murder involving the biggest figures of the movement: Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. But with this release marking just one of four movies on the Beats in the three years, isn't it high time to kill the incredibly hyped darling the Beats themselves have become?
Milwaukees BBQ scene still smokin

Milwaukee’s BBQ scene still smokin’

Brian Keogh November 19, 2013
All across the nation Americans take pride in barbecue. But in Milwaukee you hear more about brats and cheese curds than their comfort food companions, ribs, pulled pork or some delicious corn bread. So to help narrow the scope of Milwaukee's best, we looked at three of the newer barbecue establishments in the city. At these haunts, down home cooking is king, smoking meat is a craft and the perfect sauce is an art form.
