Digging for Experience

There’s a gold mine of possibilities. Only, this isn’t the 1848 California gold rush, and finding gold at Marquette – other than students’ T-shirts on campus – means landing an internship. As a fellow searcher, internships seem to have taken over the minds of college students across campus. A new semester is coming with businesses and organizations looking for fresh minds to stress out and new ways to accomplish said goal.

Students are taught by professors and administrators that the only way to find future success is through the right work experience. I couldn’t agree more; however, the definition of experience varies. Another word for experience is practice. Continuous practice of specific field can be done individually and sometimes prepares you better than professional settings. As my old volleyball coach use to say: Practices makes permanent.

Of course, the Internet solves all problems. Here’s a tip: Go to Twitter – for all you tweet peeps out there – or any social media site for that matter, and simply type “internships” in the search box. Easy, right? Although not 100 percent accurate on what you may be looking for, it’s a good start.

The perfect internship is probably not waiting for your beckoning call, but the resources are available. Marquette’s Career Services Center is going to become a best friend, the sibling you never had and your personal employment matchmaker.

Then: Apply. Apply. Apply. There may be thousands of jobs out there, but there are hundreds of thousands of applicants out there as well. The way to a women’s heart may be chocolate, but the way to your boss’s heart is your resume – complete with recommendations and accolades.
