The Alpha Chi Omega sorority hosted its annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event over the weekend to raise awareness of sexual assault and violence toward women.

Several people participated in the event, which involves men walking a mile in high heels. University President Michael Lovell participated for the second year and the men’s basketball team walked as well.

Thank you so much for promoting Alpha Chi Omega’s event, we all work really hard to raise awareness about domestic violence. This event is particularly close to our hearts because it it directly related to our cause. There is a distinction between Alpha Chi Omega and the national organization, also titled “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes”. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes supports sexual assault and gender violence prevention. Alpha Chi Omega’s philanthropy is domestic violence awareness. Additionally, while the event is titled “Walk a Mile in HER shoes,” we actually promote awareness of all types of violence- which includes violence against men. As our Vice President of Philanthropy, Erin Herdeman, said in her speech, “we walk for our mothers, brothers, co-workers, and friends who have been affected by domestic violence”. Men are also not the only ones walking in heels, but more often choose to do so. This is not a requirement to participate in the event. We are very thankful to Dr. Lovell, who has been very supportive of our cause, the Marquette basketball team, the Gold ‘n Blues, Erin Perkins from the Milwaukee Health Department, and the hundreds of attendees who helped us raise thousands of dollars to directly benefit the Milwaukee Women’s Center.
