Alcohol referrals in residence halls doubled last year, MUPD reports

Alcohol disciplinary referrals in residence halls doubled from 2013 to 2014, according to Marquette Police Department’s Security and Fire Safety Report released Thursday.

There were 743 alcohol-related disciplinary referrals reported in residence halls, an increase from 345 referrals in 2013, according to the report. In total, 751 alcohol referrals were reported on campus in 2014.

The report includes statistics compiled from MUPD, the Office of Student Development and the Office of Residence Life. All of the report’s statistics were reported to one of those offices.

A 2013 upward trend of robberies continued in 2014 with 13 reported robberies on public property, two of which were on campus. There were eight on public property in 2013.

The report also shows an increase in drug arrests on campus during 2014. Out of 34 total arrests on campus, 33 were in residence halls, increasing from 27 in 2013.

However, there was a decrease in on-campus liquor arrests, down from 16 in 2013 to 10 in 2014. There was also a decrease in on-campus burglary last year, down from 13 reported incidents in 2013 to 11 in 2014.

There were no reported aggravated assaults on campus in 2014, marking a decrease from the four on campus in 2013. There were two reported incidents of aggravated assault on public property in 2014.

The report stressed the benefits of resources students can use to remain safe on campus, including the LIMO service, student patrol escorts and blue light phones.
