The Marquette women’s soccer team lost its second straight game when it fell to Minnesota 1-0 Friday night.

Marquette and Minnesota played a physical, back and forth first half. The Golden Eagles were the first to get some pressure in the offensive zone, but the Golden Gophers responded right back. By the middle of the second half, the teams couldn’t get any quality chances, but each did have its fair share of physical play. Just 30 seconds after coming into the game, sophomore Darian Powell received a yellow card for a foul.

The Golden Eagles finished off the half with more scoring chances, but Minnesota star goaltender Tarah Hobbs saved the shot. At the end of the half, Marquette and Minnesota were tied at 0.

In the second half, the Golden Gophers were able to pull ahead. In the 59th minute, redshirt junior Taylor Stainbrook fed a pass to freshman Sydney Squires, who beat Marquette goaltender Amanda Engel. It was Squires third goal of the season.

Both Marquette and Minnesota had some corner kick chances to knock in a goal, but after Minnesota’s goal, the wind seemed to fall out of the Golden Eagles’ sails. Marquette played physical, getting called for numerous fouls, but neither the Golden Eagles nor Golden Gophers had any threatening chances.

Marquette’s best chances came within the closing minutes of the game. The Golden Eagles were able to sustain pressure with the clock counting down, and were able to get a corner kick. Marquette laid the pass up and were able to get a quality shot off, but it was saved by Hobbs.

The Golden Gophers were able to whether Marquette’s attack, and was able to get to the final whistle ahead 1-0. Despite outshooting Minnesota 12-9, the Golden Gophers were able to capitalize on one of the few chances they had.

“You never feel good about a loss, but we can take a lot of positives from today’s game,” head coach Markus Roeders told GoMarquette.com. “Our effort was there, we created chances, but the ultimate goal is to score and win and we fell short in that regard.”

The Golden Eagles will return to Valley Fields to take on Nebraska Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
