Artist to watch: Phantogram

“They’re kind of alternative, dark electronica, with a bit of hip-hop thrown in, but still rock and roll, you know? Just listen to them, I swear,” was basically how I tried to describe Phantogram to most of my friends. A quick Google search describes them as “electronic rock,” but I stand by my description.

I first heard of Phantogram when their song “Lights” was featured in the “Hunger Games: Catching Fire” soundtrack and have been obsessed with their sound since then. The New York-based duo recently released their sophomore album “Voices.” Although it is not perfect, the album’s mix of influences is a great refresher in a sea of generic indie rock “hits.” Singles like “Fall in Love” and “Black Out Days” are so catchy you’ll find yourself hitting repeat over and over again.

With two studio albums and four EP’s Phantogram isn’t exactly a “new band” on the scene, but rather one to watch as they continue their steady climb to the top.

Phantogram will bring their headlining tour to Milwaukee’s historic Pabst Theater on April 11.
