For the Marquette women’s soccer team, it’s either win or pack it in, and the Golden Eagles don’t plan on an early exit in the College Cup.

Marquette, drawing the No. 2 seed in its region after winning the Big East Championship, will square off with Western Michigan at Valley Fields Friday at 7 p.m. The Broncos won the Mid-American Conference Championship and received an automatic bid.

The Golden Eagles are aware one crucial miscue can close the book on their campaign, so this week the team’s approach changed to reflect that possibility.

“It’s one and done. If you mess up, if a mistake happens, whatever it is, the season’s over,” senior midfielder Cara Jacobson said. “I think a little more is on the line. We’re kind of fine tuning things and becoming more focused. It’s definitely a little bit of a change in attitude, and I think we’ll see that more as these next couple of weeks go on.”

Western Michigan last appeared in the College Cup in 2003. This is Marquette’s sixth consecutive trip to the tournament, and the experience factor could play a role in the outcome Friday. Coach Markus Roeders, however, said he realizes a program that does not often qualify will try to make the most of its ride.

“(The experience) makes a difference, but I think they’ll bring energy, they’ll bring excitement,” Roeders said. “They won their tournament, so they’re champions of their own league, we’re champions of our league. I think that, in itself, will give them the motivation and drive to make some noise.”

The Broncos enter the match 11-5-5 overall and 4-4-3 on the road. The Broncos had similar defensive success as the Golden Eagles this season, giving up just 19 goals and earning 11 shutouts, two of which in 0-0 draws. The offense was shown to be aggressive, outshooting opponents 325-218. Juniors Rachel Chaney and Aubrey Sudomier each lead Western Michigan with 18 points and a combined five game-winning goals.

Marquette is 2-0 all-time against the Broncos winning the last meeting 1-0 on Aug. 19, 2011, at Valley Fields. Senior midfielder Maegan Kelly, who made her first career start in that match, scored the lone goal.

Western Michigan’s scouting report on Marquette will surely give it a headache, as the Golden Eagles have far too many weapons for one team to handle. Between Marquette’s 11 shutouts and 15 different goal scorers, the Broncos will be overwhelmed.

“When our intensity level is at its highest, our team is unstoppable if the defense is playing to its full potential, winning 50-50 balls and not letting (sophomore goal keeper Amanda Engel) see even any shots,” sophomore midfielder Ann Marie Lynch said. “As far as the offense goes, constantly attacking, playing our game, not attacking through the middle. We like to play it wide and serve balls in.”

An advantage Marquette will have is its ability to rest between matches. The Golden Eagles will have home field advantage through the quarterfinals and will only need to travel if they reach the semifinals, held Dec. 6 in Cary, N.C. The last time Marquette traveled for a match was Oct. 20 at DePaul.

“We’ve been in a routine for a month now, not having to miss class or anything,” Lynch said. “The stress factor of not having to travel goes down so much, and that’s really helpful, especially going into the tournament.”

If Marquette wins, it will play the winner of Iowa vs. Notre Dame Nov. 22.
