Men’s Tennis

Over the past weekend, the Marquette men’s tennis team (11-8) had three matches in two days en route to winning the consolation bracket at the Boise State Spring Break Classic.

The Golden Eagles went 2-1 over that stretch with two victories Saturday: 5-1 over Ball State (8-7) and 6-0 over Eastern Washington (8-11) but lost to No. 57 Idaho (12-2) 5-1 in the first round of the tournament on Friday.

The one Golden Eagle who went undefeated through the weekend was junior Jonathan Schwerin. Schwerin defeated Idaho junior Alan Shin 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 Friday.

Then Saturday Schwerin defeated Eastern Washington freshman Luis Altimires 6-4, 6-3 and Ball State senior Shaun Bussert 7-5, 6-3.

Sophomore Jose Crowley didn’t have the weekend Schwerin had as he went 1-2, with his one victory coming against Eastern Washington sophomore Fernando Mussolini.

Doubles was not played throughout the entire tournament due to weather, which limited court access to only singles play.

Marquette’s next match will be Friday against Toledo.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team (11-7) went 1-1 over the weekend with a 4-3 loss to Louisville (11-6) on Saturday, followed by a 4-3 win over Cincinnati (5-10) on Sunday. The win against Cincinnati ended a three-match losing streak for Marquette.

The all-important doubles play point led the way for Marquette in its two weekend matches, as it won five of six doubles matches against Louisville and Cincinnati.

Junior Olga Fischer and freshman Rocio Diaz was the one duo to fall over the weekend. Louisville freshman Stefani Villajuan and junior Amelia Harris defeated the Marquette duo, 8-1.

Junior Paola Calderon and senior Rachael Hush went undefeated in the three matches they participated in.

Hush and senior Christina Ruiz continued their strong doubles performance this season with a 9-7 victory over Louisville freshmen Julia Fellerhoff and Rebecca Shine.  The duo also beat sophomore Caitilin O’Gara and senior Lindsey Lonergan of Cincinnati 8-6.

Marquette’s next match is Saturday at the Helfaer Tennis Center against Chicago State at 11 a.m.
