Marquette routs DePaul 94-64

For the second time in as many games, the Marquette Golden Eagles found themselves with a double-digit lead in the second half.

This time they didn’t let it slip away.

Jae Crowder, Jimmy Butler, and Darius Johnson-Odom formed a three-headed attack to lead Marquette to a 94-64 win over the DePaul Blue Demons Tuesday night at the Bradley Center.

After watching an 18-point lead with less than seven minutes to play slip away Saturday at Lousiville, the Golden Eagles kept their foot on the pedal in the second half to put the game away.

Crowder surprisingly struggled from behind the arc, missing all three of his attempts, but not much else. He just missed out on his first career double-double to finish with 18 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. He also added a career-high three blocks and a steal in the win.

The Blue Demons (6-12, 0-6) were able to keep the game close at first, but Marquette pulled away and closed the half with a 16-2 to give them a 46-29 advantage at intermission.

“That run definitely sparked our energy level and so we knew that we were probably going to start to open this lead up,” said Jimmy Butler, who finished with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and eight rebounds. “But it was mostly about maintaining that lead and not letting them come back. But definitely by us scoring on every basket going into the half, it showed we were not going to let up.”

During that run, five different Golden Eagles scored points and the Blue Demons made just one of their final nine shots while turning the ball over three times. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell knew Marquette would come out with passion after Saturday’s heartbreaking loss.

“I think we ran into a very determined team tonight,” Purnell said. “I thought they were awfully good defensively, I thought they did a terrific job being aggressive and relentless on the offensive glass, and then when they started to shoot the ball well from the perimeter, we were in trouble.”

“Determined” seemed like the perfect word on this night, as the Golden Eagles (13-6, 4-2) led by as many as 38 points and made over 61 percent of their shots in the second half.

Washington Wizards rookie point guard and Raleigh, N.C. native John Wall was in attendance. The Milwaukee Bucks host the Wizards tomorrow night. Wall keeps in touch with fellow Raleigh native Johnson-Odom and freshman Vander Blue on Twitter.

Blue got back on track after a poor outing against Louisville to finish with 12 points, two rebounds, and two assists in 22 minutes.

“I think he was completely on point today,” said head coach Buzz Williams of his freshman guard. “This may have been his best night. (His statline) was pretty impressive for 22 minutes.”

Freshman Brandon Young, who was highly recruited by Marquette, finished with 11 points but turned the ball over four times. As a team, DePaul turned the ball over 22 times which led to 40 points for the Golden Eagles.
