DPS responds to homicide in off-campus neighborhood

One man was killed and another injured in a shooting that occurred last Friday at 7:22 p.m. near 18th and State streets.

The deceased man has been identified by the Milwaukee Police Department as Willie J. Lee, 30. Anne E. Schwartz, an MPD spokeswoman, said the other victim, a 34-year-old man, suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

No arrests have been made, Schwartz said in an e-mail.

Mary Pat Pfeil, senior director of university communication, said the victims are not affiliated with Marquette.

Russell Shaw, associate director of Marquette’s Department of Public Safety, said DPS officers were the first responders to the incident and tried to revive the fatally-wounded victim.

Immediately following the incident, witnesses reported seeing suspects flee the scene on foot. Students living on the 1700 block of West State Street who were in their homes at the time of the shooting reported hearing six to eight gun shots in short spurts that spanned about 10 seconds. A car at the scene had its front two windows shot out.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call MPD at 414-935-7360.

Derrick Chengery and Jim McLaughlin contributed to this report.
