MTENN Brief

The Marquette men’s tennis team defeated Toledo Thursday night at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The team won 5-2, with senior Mark Rutherford and freshman Otavio Perim dropping their sets late in the match. The win was the fifth straight for the Golden Eagles, who are so far undefeated this season.

Marquette has only dropped three sets this season.

In doubles play, Marquette defeated Toledo 8-1, 8-6 and 8-5.

In singles, however, the opposition became much more difficult. Freshman Jacob Straus and senior Niko Boulieris handled their opponents easily, defeating them 6-1, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively.

Senior Dusan Medan and freshman Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley narrowly defeated their opponents 6-4, 7-6 each, both going into tiebreakers.

The last two to play, Rutherford and Perim, went into three sets. Rutherford fell in sudden death after going down 6-7 in the first set, but coming back 7-6 in the next set. But he was defeated 10-4 in the tiebreaker.

Perim went down 1-6 in the first set, then claimed a close 7-5 second set victory. At one point in the third set, he was down 1-5 but came back to tie it up 5-5 before losing 7-5.
