As if Marquette didn’t already have enough young guards, the team received an verbal commitment from Devonte “DJ” Newbill out of Strawberry Mansion High School in Philadelphia.
Newbill, a 6-foot-4, 197-pound guard, garnered national attention after pouring in a school-record 64 points for his Knights in a 105-14 win over W.B. Saul High School. The blowout earned Newbill’s coaches much criticism for unsportsmanlike conduct but only served to strengthen Newbill’s recruiting status.
A combo-guard similar to fellow recruits Vander Blue and Reggie Smith, Newbill will be hard-pressed to find time in a crowded backcourt next season that will still include sophomore Darius Johnson-Odom, junior Dwight Buycks and freshman Junior Cadougan.
