Men’s Tennis Brief

The Marquette mens tennis team (1-0) opened its season with a 7-0 victory over Western Illinois (0-1) Saturday afternoon. The team took doubles and singles in straight sets at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.

The lineup for the Golden Eagles featured freshmen Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Otavio Perim and sophomore transfer Jose Manuel Munoz, who was a late addition to the day’s team after coach Steve Rodecap decided to rest senior Dusan Medan. Munoz proved he deserved the starting spot with his 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Senior Mark Rutherford earned his first victory at No. 1 singles since his freshman campaign in 2006-’07, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-2.

The next match-up for the Golden Eagles comes Saturday, when the team hosts Chicago State and IUPUI.
