Marquette receives stimulus money for health professions

Three Milwaukee-area schools, including Marquette, have received a portion of nearly $67,000 in stimulus money to promote the training of health officials, according to a press release from Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s office.

Marquette’s share, about $24,000, will go to a program providing scholarships to disadvantaged students studying health professions, the release said. The other two recipients were Alverno College, which was awarded $18,779, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, which received $24,042.

The money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the stimulus bill passed by Congress in February.

“By creating opportunities for students to pursue degrees in public health and dentistry and whatever else the programs offer, these people are available to work in the community,” said Marni Goldberg, communications director for Moore. “Those services are critically needed at this time.”

Marquette applies for government funding every year to fund scholarships for disadvantaged students, Susan Teerink, Marquette’s director of student financial aid, said in a statement. The amount received this year is comparable to other years.

The money will support students in the physical therapy and dentistry programs, the statement said.

It is good to see where some of that stimulus
money is going. This will help the
disadvantaged students to get good jobs and
it will help to fill those needed positions. All
of this will help the community.
