The Marquette women’s volleyball team came up a bit short, dropping a five set thriller (22-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 12-15) to Ohio State Sunday afternoon.
“That was a really hard fought match for us. I feel like we played a lot of great volleyball about 85 percent of the time and, like any coach, we want it 100 percent of the time,” said head coach Bond Shymansky.
The loss was Marquette’s first home loss of the season and it snapped an eight game win streak, dropping Marquette to 9-2 overall.
Leading the way for Marquette were junior Leslie Bielski and sophomore Ciara Jones for Marquette with 18 and 12 kills respectively. Junior Nikki Klingsporn recorded a double-double with 46 assists and 13 digs.
“We had some mistakes at the end, but it’s a learning experience,” Klingsporn said. “It was great volleyball for our team. That was probably the best we played all year.”
Marquette played an inconsistent first set missing six serves, an uncharacteristic mistake that would put the Golden Eagles down 17-21. A Bielski kill started a four point run to tie it at 21 but the Buckeyes would take the set 25-22.
Marquette dominated the second set behind good blocking and a solid attack putting up a .451 hitting percentage and holding Ohio State to a .080 hitting percentage to take the set 25-16.
The teams traded swings in the third and fourth sets with each team taking a set to set up a fifth and final set. The Buckeyes ran off to a 3-0 lead forcing Marquette to play from behind from the start. Ohio State was too much though for the Golden Eagles in the end though, putting down 11 kills and posting a .409 hitting percentage in the final set to win 15-12.
