Aldermen that support the proposal say that it will make these places safer and prevent crime inside and around bars.,”There has been a lot of talk in Milwaukee lately about a proposal to place on-duty police officers in bars and nightclubs. Officers would be in uniform, armed, and ready to take action if situations become unruly.
Aldermen that support the proposal say that it will make these places safer and prevent crime inside and around bars.
While the intent of this proposal is good, we think that the city is going a little too far. How can people enjoy their night (and a beverage of their choice) with a police officer looming over their shoulder? This measure seems excessive.
Keeping the city safe is of the utmost importance, but it should not have to come at the expense of making decent people nervous for no reason.
If an establishment has a problem with crime or violence, it seems more fitting that they make arrangements to have security in company. Even under the current proposal, businesses that need police surveillance will be expected to foot the bill. It just makes more sense for this matter to be handled privately—there are plenty of security companies that could provide this service if businesses really want or need the support.
The police union opposes this proposal, worrying that placing one or two officers in a crowded bar is a risky situation for them. They feel that officers wouldn't be able to do all that much even if a situation did arise. There's really no point that they be there in the first place.
"For an individual officer, it may be time before backup comes to help the officers, and what citizen is gonna get hurt? What officer's gonna get hurt? It's a great risk to society," said police union president John Balcerzak.
The union is in favor of putting police forces around outside of establishments, or "beat cops" on the street to help combat crime or any problems that do arise. This is a more acceptable and understandable option. It's something that should already be done anyways.
It is completely logical to concentrate police in areas where they are needed most. This action, while helping reduce crime, would not put a damper on people's entertainment in the way that placing officers inside the actual bar or nightclub would. When people go to bars, they go to relax and enjoy themselves. Adding tension with the company of an observing officer would take away from the atmosphere that provides this opportunity.
Dearest city of Milwaukee, putting police officers in nightclubs is going too far. Don't be the party-pooper. Do what is logical and keep police where they belong.
