"We just didn't have our eye on the ball, and we boxed out our men like we're supposed to," sophomore goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski said, "No one had their eye on the ball, and it just unfortunately hit off his backside and fell into the corner.,”The Marquette men's soccer team fell to 2-10-2 Saturday night at Valley Fields after losing 2-1 to Georgetown. The Hoyas' final score deflected off Marquette midfielder Scott Miller and into his own goal in the 68th minute.
"We just didn't have our eye on the ball, and we boxed out our men like we're supposed to," sophomore goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski said. "No one had their eye on the ball, and it just unfortunately hit off his backside and fell into the corner."
But the Hoyas had established control of the match long before Marquette suffered from the bad bounce. Georgetown took six shots in the first half, while Marquette managed one.
"It was a game of two halves," Marquette head coach Louis Bennett said. "I think the first half we gave the ball away recklessly, and we gave them every opportunity to attack us.
"There isn't a magic wand to what we're doing. We just have to meticulously take care of the ball and create some better opportunities."
The Hoyas nearly scored twice early in the first half after a mix-up between Pyzdrowski and his defenders. In both instances, Pyzdrowski attempted to call off his defenders who continued to chase down the ball. Georgetown got off two shots as a result, but both were off-target.
"People were trying to do their own thing, and there was just miscommunication," Pyzdrowski said.
In the 44th minute, Georgetown forward Chandler Diggs raced down the left side of the field and scored from 12 yards out, beating Pyzdrowski to the far post.
One minute into the second half, junior midfielder Dan Addis scored off a volley from junior forward Duncan Silvert-Noftle. After a one-touch, Addis struck the ball to the far post from 12 yards out. The Golden Eagles ended the half with nine shots, five of which were on goal.
Marquette continued to put pressure on the Hoyas' defense through the second half. Freshman forward Sam Etim fired from inside the box and hit the top of the crossbar in the final minute of regulation.
"We're getting a lot of chances, and we're trying to put them away, but we're not getting any breaks," Addis said. "We're getting a lot of chances but we're not finishing—same story."
The Golden Eagles have five games left on the season and are still trying to reach the Big East Tournament to salvage the rest of the season.
"The team is going to attempt to win every single game," Bennett said. "We're going to continue to put a game plan together, and we'll have great opportunities.
"It's no surprise we've got a lot of work to do. However, what we'll do game-by-game is to get better."
