The alert, which was issued around 4 p.m., reported a robbery in the immediate off-campus neighborhood in the 800 block of North 15th Street.,”Marquette issued a Special Safety Alert Tuesday, which alerted the campus community of two suspects of an attempted strong-armed robbery that are still at large.
The alert, which was issued around 4 p.m., reported a robbery in the immediate off-campus neighborhood in the 800 block of North 15th Street. According to the report, two female suspects approached the victim, a 21-year-old female student, and demanded her backpack. The victim refused, and the suspects then tried to punch the victim, according to the Department of Public Safety report. The victim was not injured.
The report also gave detailed descriptions of the two suspects. According to the report, both suspects are black females in their late teens or early twenties.
A white or cream colored late model station wagon was also reported to have been involved in the incident, the report said.
The Milwaukee Police Department, as well DPS, was contacted. Anyone with any information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact either department.
Included with the report were safety tips from DPS regarding personal safety measures. DPS officers also went door-to-door in the nearby off-campus neighborhood with hard copies of the safety alert, said Sue Cooper, DPS crime prevention officer.
Capt. Russ Shaw, associate director of DPS, said an alert was warranted for a few reasons.
"Because this happened in broad daylight, we were able to get a very good description of the suspects," Shaw said. "We not only wanted to help students be diligent in their own safety, but we also hope someone might be able to help us."
Shaw said the fact that this incident took place so close to campus was concerning and another reason for the alert.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, the suspects had not been identified or detained.
Further information on the incident will be available online as this story develops.
