Spring break is almost here — one more midterm or two then a whole week of freedom. Some students are headed for the comforts of home and spending a week in bed, while others have fabulous, exotic getaways planned. For those who are stuck on campus for spring break (or for those who call Milwaukee home), there's still plenty to do — and none of it requires a passport, plane ticket or sunscreen.
The Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, 524 S. Layton Blvd., currently offers a childlike getaway. The Lego Land Model Train Show will be running through March 22 and features model trains that run through a Lego brick landscape along with the flora and fauna of the Domes. What's more, there are model train enthusiasts on hand to answer any questions about the exhibit or the model trains.
Monday, Milwaukee Area Technical College hosts its annual Five Star Food and Wine Night. Advance tickets cost $45 ($55 at the door) and include beverage tickets. Students and faculty of culinary arts and baking classes at MATC will prepare the food, and guests can visit several different stations, each featuring a different culinary style. Each station provides information on wine pairings to go with the featured food.
"There will be music in the background and raffles. It's a very fun event," said Liane Hanson, a MATC spokeswoman.
While the men's basketball team finishes off its regular season Saturday, the Golden Eagles aren't the only team to play in the Bradley Center, 1001 N. 4th St. The stadium also hosts the Milwaukee Bucks. With such affordable ticket prices, there's no reason to end the basketball season so early. Bango's bunch play four home games over the break — Golden State Warriors (Saturday), New York Knicks (Tuesday), New Orleans Hornets (3/13), Boston Celtics (3/15) — as the Bucks try to secure its playoff spot.
