New coach Bond Shymansky wasted little time making his presence felt as the new women's volleyball coach at Marquette University. Setter Nikki Klingsporn transferred from the University of Wisconsin for the 2009 season. Klingsporn led the Badgers in assists at 6.36 per set in the 2008 season and fills a big need for the Golden Eagles.
Shymansky recruited Klingsporn while she was at Georgia Tech and was very pleased with her decision.
"We did everything we could to get her," Shymansky said. "She has been around competitive athletics her whole life and you see it."
Klingsporn's arrival is especially significant because of the team's current situation at the setter position. Junior Caryn Mastandrea, the team's starting setter last season is no longer with the team, and freshman Laira Akin is still working to get back from a foot injury that kept her out for most of the 2008 season.
