The 88 have traveled a very long road both musically and literally to get to the band's third album, Not Only. But Also.
From songs featured on shows such as "The OC," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Laguna Beach," one cannot watch TV without hearing some of the band's songs. The Los Angeles-based band has made their foundations playing the local scene as well as with other notable bands such as the Smashing Pumpkins and Matt Costa.
The 88's last two albums Kind of Light and Over and Over have been successful, which the band, consisting of Keith Slettedahl (vocals/guitar), Adam Merrin (piano), and Anthony Zimmitti (drums), hope to continue with Not Only. But Also.
The CD is a mix of various types of songs, from the love ballad "No One Here" to the much more upbeat "I'm Nothing" and "Sons and Daughters." The music is upbeat and appeals to the heart.
The songs show a very vulnerable attitude towards love and life in general. The tone of the songs is very upbeat and in general, the melodies and tempo are very well blended. The mix of the steady drumbeats and piano through out the CD make for a very percussion based band. Add the over tone of the guitar and you have a very solid melody and harmony.
The vocals, however, leave something to be desired. Slettedahl has a droning, slightly whiny voice that, even though he delivers on tone and melody, distracts from the performance as a whole. This issue is easy to look past, however, because of the afore mentioned artistic abilities of the band and its skill on their individual instruments.
If you like, not only, a quirky blend of pop rock, but also, electronica and classic rock, this is a good CD to pick up.
