Marquette women’s volleyball team brief NB1 TKO2 PC3

In a fifth set showdown in both games, Marquette shut down Villanova 3-2, while losing to Seton Hall 3-2.

In a fifth set showdown in both games, Marquette shut down Villanova 3-2, while losing to Seton Hall 3-2.

Infamous for its slow starts, the Golden Eagles barely won its first set against Villanova after letting the Wildcats take a 14-7 lead. Outside hitter Ashlee Fisher made five kills to bring the Golden Eagles back into the game allowing them to close out the match at 25-23.

The team lost its next two matches, making a fourth-set win necessary. During the fifth set, the Golden Eagles' the team went on a 10-0 run and ended the match 15-3.

Setter Caryn Mastandrea played well offensively tallying seven kills, while also recording 43 assists and 10 digs.

Although Marquette entered a similar five-set situation against Seton Hall on Sunday, it wasn't so lucky in the last match. After winning the first and third sets, and losing the second and fourth, Marquette lost a hard-fought fifth set.

Outside hitter Leslie Bielski helped lead the team to 15 early points before faltering following a Seton Hall timeout. At 17-16, the Pirates scored three points in a row, ending in 19-17.

Although the team lost, Mastandrea recorded the first triple-double since setter Sarah Vernon in 2004. She registered 11 kills, 48 assists and 16 digs.

After the weekend, Marquette ranked No. 12 in the Big East with a 4-8 conference record. Villanova and Seton Hall rank No. 10 and No. 7, respectively.
