Angst serves as ‘quiet leader’

Angst leads the defense with her performance on the court in her final season with the Marquette women's volleyball team.,”Terri Angst is no loud mouth on the court.

Described by her coach and teammates as a "calming and quiet leader," Angst leads the defense with her performance in her final season with the Marquette women's volleyball team.

"She isn't the person leading a baton, she's the person with the pack on the back and hauling stuff," coach Pati Rolf said. "She's the worker, and leads by example."

Angst, a defensive setter, followed a rough road to make it to her senior leadership role with the Golden Eagles.

Coming into her freshman year, Angst blew out her ACL and rehabbed for six months. She blew out her knee again in 2005, and had to rehab for another six months.

"I really don't think people understand how hard it was to get to her senior year" Rolf said. "She continues to play, after she missed her freshman year. She rehabbed and came back, which is impressive after she lost two years of her career."

As a sophomore and junior, Angst served as the team's libero, playing 100 games during her junior year and finishing 10th in the Big East in digs.

However this year, freshman Amy Deelo took over the libero spot, transferring Angst to a defensive setter position.

Angst said she's come to terms with her new position.

"So I'm on the court for half the amount of time, but it's nice for me when I'm on the bench and I can take a breather and also watch and study what others are doing," Angst said. "Libero is more playing time, but I guess I've come to accept my new role on the team."

Angst has been the core of the defensive team, which Rolf said is at the level of a top-25 team. Junior Hailey Viola and Deelo have improved by learning from Angst, she said.

"Hailey's numbers are getting stronger, and when you do great work, you make the people around you work hard and pick up what they're doing," Rolf said. "That has happened with Amy, Hailey and Terri."

This season, Angst has made 113 digs, averaging about 1.61 per game and taking fourth place on the team in number of digs.

While Deelo leads the defense in digs, Angst's strengths lie in her passing. During the Wisconsin-Milwaukee game, Deelo made 24 digs, while Angst recorded nine. Yet in that same game, Angst had a 2.6 passing number, above the good average of 2.3.

Rolf said the defense covers for each other by making up for one another's deficits.

"The three of them complement each other and enhance each other," Rolf said. "Deelo will step in front of Terri to take balls, and they all get along so well."

Angst said her play has developed over the season, as she holds higher expectations of herself since playing with Deelo and Viola.

"We really work to hold each other accountable," Angst said. "When the three of us are back there, we keep the ball in play and stay very energized with each other."

Deelo agreed and said Angst serves as a stronghold in the defensive lineup.

"She's definitely a leader in the back row. She's been through so much with her injuries and bounced back," Deelo said. "Definitely in the back row she's a big presence."

After her last season at Marquette, Angst said she sees herself working as a physical therapist in an suburban area, keeping in contact with Marquette.

But as for these last few weeks, Angst is determined to keep on winning.

"I want to be consistent with passing, be aggressive and get after balls, and help teammates out as much as possible," Angst said.
