The Golden Eagles played South Florida in Tampa, Fla., on Friday, losing 25-21, 25-20, 25-16.

Marquette had a tough time fending off the Bulls' outside hitter Marcela Gurgel, who ranks No. 7 in the nation for number of kills. Gurgel led South Florida to a 5-0 lead in the first set, and the Golden Eagles were unable to catch up.

In the second set, the Golden Eagles started off strong with a 4-0 lead from outside hitter Leslie Bielski and middle blocker Rabbecka Gonyo. From there, the Bulls took off with an 11-4 run, hampering any chance for a Marquette return.

The same pattern continued in the third set, with South Florida taking a 9-2 lead. Senior Ashlee Fisher recorded 10 kills and Bielski eight, while South Florida's Gurgel made 11.

Sunday's match against Georgetown proved to be more promising, with the Golden Eagles keeping the scores closer (26-24, 25-19, 25-23).

In the first set, Marquette managed to pull ahead 5-2. The teams wrangled for the lead the rest of the game, before Georgetown scored four points at 24-22, ending the game at 26-24.

The second and third sets followed suit. Both teams fought for the lead, but Georgetown eked out the final points. The game was not a complete loss, as right-side redshirt junior hitter Katie Vancura and Gonyo each made a career-high four solo blocks.
