Men’s soccer struggles to a draw

So far this season, Marquette's men's soccer team has failed to win a single game after going a goal down.

In fact, in four out of six games this season the Golden Eagles have failed to even score a goal after being a goal down.

Last weekend, and for most of the season, the team has pointed to a lack of scoring opportunities and missed chances in front of the goal.

However, in Saturday night's game against Seton Hall, Marquette took a season-high 19 shots, 10 of which were on goal. As impressive of a showing as it was, Marquette failed to beat the Pirates and settled for a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods.

Junior forward Nick Kay scored the Golden Eagles' lone goal. He said he understands netting an early goal is important to maintain momentum in the game.

"Soccer has waves of when you're on and when you're not. An early goal in any game will give you a little bit of a rise," Kay said. "But like I say, soccer is really waves of when you have the ball and when you're creating chances and when you don't."

Hector Navarro and Anthony Colaizzi had opportunities to score within the first 10 minutes of the game after beating Seton Hall defenders, but both players failed to find the back of the net.

"We had several chances in the first half," coach Louis Bennett said. "We had four one-on-one's with the goalkeeper. (One time) the goalkeeper got to make a save. I think we missed the other three.

"People criticize us for not making opportunities, well we do what we can, and today we were much better at doing that. Strikers don't grow on trees."

Before Saturday night's game, Marquette failed to win six out of seven times when its opponent had scored in the second half. The one Marquette win came against Bryant in the season opener. By that time, however, Marquette was already up 4-0.

So when Seton Hall scored in the 50th minute off a curling free kick that flew just past the hands of a diving Matt Pyzdrowski, things looked bad for the Golden Eagles.

Seton Hall set a season high for number of shots with 16 on the night, but Pyzdrowski was up to the challenge and kept the Pirates to a single goal.

"It was a little more than normal," Pyzdrowski said. "But it's nothing that I'm not used to. As a goalkeeper you always have to be on your toes anyway as it is even if you're not getting shots."

However, 13 minutes later Marquette grabbed the equalizer when Kay headed the ball into the back of the net from six yards out, and the Golden Eagles found the momentum they needed. Marquette took nine shots in the second half, eight of which were on goal.

Marquette's track record in overtime games has not favored them either. The Golden Eagles have failed to win a game in overtime in over a year since beating Cincinnati 2-1 last September. And after the draw against the Pirates, Marquette has failed to win in 10 consecutive overtime games.

"It could have (been a win), should have," Bennett said. "But we had opportunities. (The players) can enjoy this because they played well.

"But I'm sure once they see the game film they may think this was two points lost and not one point gained."
