James T. Areddy, a 1985 graduate of Marquette, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. Areddy, 43, who works as a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Shanghai, China, received the highest award in journalism for his contribution to a series reporting on the impact of China's capitalism and its effects on a plethora of other issues including inequality and pollution.
After graduating from the College of Business Administration, Areddy worked various jobs in New York City and in August of 1986 he was hired as a reporting assistant for the Wall Street Journal. In 1992 he became the bureau chief for the Associated Press – Dow Jones News Services in Hong Kong.
Areddy returned to the United States in September 2001, after receiving the John S. Knight Fellowship at Standford University to study diverse topics in history, humanities, biology and engineering. He returned to Shanghai in August of 2002 and began working as a senior correspondent for the Dow Jones Newswires. He began his current job with the Wall Street Journal in February 2005.
