Football Anyone?

Marquette has its own brand of “Monday Night Football” and it is played four times a week at Marquette stadium.

The men’s intramural football program began play this month, with significantly fewer teams this year than in previous seasons.

While participation is up this fall for indoor intramural sports, football and other men’s outdoor activities have seen a decline in participants – most notably freshmen.

Though the location of the field (37th and Michigan) may have discouraged some from the men’s program, the quality of the field could not have been a problem.

“We didn’t seem to get a lot of freshmen this year and it’s too bad because the lightning is the best it’s ever been,” said John Kratzer, co-director of intramural sports.

The lights at Marquette Stadium have been completely revamped since last season which is an important repair considering some games were played at 11 p.m.

Because of the low number of freshmen in the men’s program this fall, an all-freshman tournament league is being organized in an effort to boost interest in football and intramural sports.

“We’re starting the league hoping to get freshmen involved in the program early in the year. Maybe that will carry over to the rest of they year for all intramural sports,” Kratzer said.

While the sign-up deadline passed for the standard men’s league freshmen are encouraged to sign up for the all-freshman league by counting the intramural office 224-1558.
