As a College of Business Administration student, I was concerned to read about the recent unprofessional behavior of some Marquette Student Government members.
Being that MUSG is a nonpartisan governing body, there is no room for political comments or slights within its meetings. Furthermore, the idea of employing a political tactic like a filibuster seems contrary to MUSG's mission, "To identify, understand, actively address and represent students' needs, concerns, and interests through acts of leadership and service which reflect Catholic, Jesuit ideals and contribute to the betterment of the Marquette University Community."
I do not contest that a filibuster is free speech and allowable under rules of procedure. I do question, however, whether political grandstanding, or engaging in honest and open debate, is a more effective way of representing the best interests of students. Students often question what exactly MUSG does for us, and senators should consider what kind of message acting unprofessionally and not engaging in a serious debate sends.
This letter is not meant to place blame on MUSG or degrade its members. Rather, it is my hope that all senators remember who it is they represent on this campus and take serious their task of working for the students of Marquette and ensuring a strong future for the university and its community.
