Louisville? More like, umm, Lose-iville
One of Marquette's best basketball rivals from this decade visits Milwaukee this weekend.
Let's recap the last three Marquette-Louisville matchups at the Bradley Center:
Feb. 15, 2003 – Louisville 73, Marquette 70. Two words: Reece Gaines. After Marquette's Travis Diener hit a three to tie the game, the Louisville star answered with a game-winning 25-footer with five seconds left.
March 6, 2004 – Marquette 81, Louisville 80. Freshman Dameon Mason (Remember him? He's now riding the bench on an NIT-bound LSU team) converted a three-point play in the final seconds to give the Golden Eagles the win.
Feb. 17, 2005 – Louisville 64, Marquette 61. Francisco Garcia capped the Cardinals' comeback with a three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to halt the Golden Eagles' upset bid.
Fun stuff.
Head coach Rick Pitino finally has this year's squad hitting peak form, as the Cardinals (18-8, 8-4 Big East) are coming off a 66-53 win Monday at conference-leading Pittsburgh.
And again … Louisville
The women's basketball team hopes to get the Louisville-bashing momentum started earlier Saturday when it hosts the No. 20 Cardinals (22-4, 8-4) at the Al McGuire Center at 2 p.m.
Unlike the men's team, this Louisville team enters Milwaukee trying to recover from a humbling 84-56 loss at conference-leading Connecticut. But the Cardinals feature the Big East's top scorer in Angel McCoughtry, who averages 21.9 points per game.
No. 21 Marquette (21-4, 9-3) needs a win to stay in second place in the Big East. Senior Christina Quaye has scored at least 20 points in three straight games.
Louisville coverage: Done, we promise
The track and field team competes at the Big East Indoor Championships this weekend in Akron, Ohio.
The men's tennis team (3-3) has gone 1-1 in each of its first three weekends of spring play. This weekend there's a catch: Marquette plays just one opponent (at Purdue, Saturday).
The women's tennis team (1-7) heads to Albuquerque, N.M., over the weekend for matches against Northern Arizona and New Mexico.
